New pages from Fauci's diary and other primary sources continue to surface. This article will be updated as verified material warrants it — every addition dated and marked as an update, never silently folded into the original text.
What They Knew
On 27 July 2026, Senator Rand Paul released 465 pages of Anthony Fauci's own diary, spanning 2001 to 2015. In it, Fauci describes a colonel telling him the anthrax mailed to Senator Daschle in 2001 was "weapon grade — better than any bioweapon the USA has ever made," while the government told the public it was "garden-variety." Fauci's own verdict, in his own handwriting, at the time: "Clearly, someone is intentionally not telling Gov. Ridge the truth or he is masking the truth." That habit — knowing one thing privately, saying something calmer publicly — did not stay in 2001. It is the throughline of the entire COVID-19 response. What follows is that pattern, chapter by chapter, with the primary source attached to every claim.
1. The Pattern
On 8 February 2020, Fauci called Tom Frieden, the former CDC director. His diary entry that night puts the case fatality rate at "more like 0.2-0.3% rather than 2.0%" — comparable, in his own words, to "a bad influenza." That number never reached the public in those terms.
Five Weeks Later, a Different Number
On Hannity, 10 March: "The mortality for this is about 2-2.5%. It's probably lower than that, closer to 1%. But even if it's 1%, it's 10x more lethal than the seasonal flu."
The next day, under oath before the House Oversight Committee: "The stated mortality over all of this when you look at all the data including China is about three percent." Even his own downward revision — "closer to 1%" — sat three to five times above the figure in his diary a month earlier. The "10x more lethal than the flu" framing became the sentence that stuck.
UPDATE — "Never. I Never Did." His Own Diary Says Otherwise
In an April 2023 New York Times interview, asked about the fallout of lockdown-era policy, Fauci said: "Show me a school that I shut down and show me a factory that I shut down. Never. I never did." His defense: "I gave a public-health recommendation that echoed the CDC's recommendation, and people made a decision based on that."
His diary, the night of 15 March 2020: "I spoke with Bill de Blasio (Mayor – NYC) and convinced him based on what I was saying publicly and my conversation tonight to close the NYC schools... I went on to tell him he should close the bars and restaurants in NYC. He said that he would base this on my recommendation. I had a similar call with Ann O'Leary, the COS of Gov. Gavin Newsom of California. Ann said that based on my TV appearances today and yesterday, the Governor has decided to close the schools in California as well as the bars and restaurants." Two states, one phone call each, the same night — and the verb he used for himself was "convinced," not "recommended."
2. The Numbers Game Was Not an American Habit
Nine days before Fauci's diary entry, the Dutch national health institute (RIVM) ran its own numbers. A risk analysis dated 9 February 2020 described the threat as "a serious to catastrophic threat to national security." A scenario study on 13 February projected a worst case of six times the death toll of a normal flu wave. Neither document was shared with the public or with parliament. The public message from RIVM that month was that there was "no reason for concern." The internal memos surfaced only in 2022, through a freedom-of-information request filed by the public broadcaster NOS.
On 3 March 2020, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told the press: "Globally, about 3.4% of reported COVID-19 cases have died." The figure was arithmetically true and functionally misleading — it divided confirmed deaths by confirmed cases, with no correction for the far larger number of mild and undetected infections. It became the headline number for weeks.
A Dutch Politician Asked the Same Question Fauci's Diary Already Answered
Thierry Baudet, leader of Forum voor Democratie, submitted a formal parliamentary question: "Given that on 25 June you established an Infection Fatality Risk (IFR) of 0.32 for COVID-19, and it is therefore less lethal than previously thought, why does the virus still sit in Group A of the Public Health Act" — the same category as MERS, SARS, smallpox, and polio.
The government's written reply, verified word-for-word against the official parliamentary record: "The Infection Fatality Rate is not the only factor weighed in determining which diseases belong in group A. It concerns an overall assessment of the threat and the risk to society..." The reply confirmed the 0.32% figure. It did not change the classification. A citation Baudet used — global average 0.23%, drawn from a real Stanford epidemiological paper — was later called "untrue" by fact-checkers in January 2021 and March 2022, not because the figure was invented, but because a global average was applied to the Netherlands specifically, where the actual first-wave rate ran closer to 1%.
3. The Instrument Itself Was Broken by Design
Every number above depended on one thing: a positive test. The PCR protocol that became the global standard within days — written by Christian Drosten and Victor Corman, accepted by Eurosurveillance within 24 hours of submission, in use worldwide before peer review had time to catch up — had an origin problem of its own. Two of its co-authors, Olfert Landt and Marco Kaiser, held the Managing Director and Scientific Advisor titles at TIB Molbiol, the company that became the first in the world to sell the matching test kits, built on that exact protocol.
The Cycle Count No One Standardized
A "positive" PCR result depends on how many amplification cycles (Ct) a lab runs before giving up. The US CDC used 40. The Netherlands' own RIVM ran its original protocol at 50 cycles — higher than any of the four countries checked for this piece — while writing, in a formal answer to parliament: "There is, in fact, no [cutoff] for a well-developed PCR test... it cannot be given a generic specific guideline." Independent critics and, eventually, a 22-scientist review of the Corman-Drosten protocol itself put the reliability ceiling at 30-35 cycles. Above that, false positives climb fast.
On 20 April 2020, the World Health Organization issued a rule that closed the loop: "A death due to COVID-19 may not be attributed to another disease and should be counted independently of preexisting conditions." A positive test on a test with no fixed cutoff, run at 40-50 cycles, attached to a death that could not be assigned to a comorbidity. That is the mechanism behind every "COVID death" tally built after April 2020.
4. Punished for Being Right
Three people, three countries, three institutions — the same shape every time: an early, off-message position, an institutional punishment, and a rehabilitation that arrived years later, quietly, after the damage was done.
Rogier Louwen — Erasmus MC
A microbiologist with two decades at Erasmus MC was dismissed on the spot after an internal presentation on mRNA vaccine-linked myopericarditis. A separate integrity complaint followed in 2023, targeting a preprint he co-authored that was critical of the PCR "gold standard." The institute's own integrity committee found he had violated 10 of 11 research-integrity norms, "deliberately." On appeal, the Netherlands' national scientific integrity body overturned most of that finding in October 2024: four of five complaints unfounded, no integrity violation. Its own words: "Scientific controversies are part of science and belong in the scientific forum. They should not be settled, in terms of research integrity, through a complaints procedure that produces a normative-legal verdict."
Jay Bhattacharya — the Great Barrington Declaration
Four days after Bhattacharya, Sunetra Gupta, and Martin Kulldorff published the Great Barrington Declaration — arguing for focused protection of the vulnerable instead of blanket lockdowns — NIH director Francis Collins emailed Fauci: "There needs to be a quick and devastating published take down of its premises." Fauci replied the same night that one was already underway.
Update, 28 July 2026: Fauci's own diary shows what that "takedown" looked like from the inside. Three days after the Declaration's publication: "Alex Azar met yesterday with Atlas and his 3 stooges – Jay Bhattacharya (Stanford), Sunetra Gupta (Oxford) and Martin Kulldorff's (Harvard)." A week later: "'Barrington Declaration' – Misleading people into thinking that it only mean[s] do not close down country and just protect the vulnerable, when in fact is means go for herd immunity, which will kill many, many people. Ha[d] long talk tonight with Jared Kushner asking his help in getting rid of Scott Atlas." Three named, credentialed scientists — not fringe figures — reduced to "3 stooges," their declaration called deliberately misleading, and the White House senior adviser enlisted to remove the administration's own dissenting voice.
On 25 March 2025, the US Senate confirmed Bhattacharya as Director of the National Institutes of Health — the agency whose leadership had ordered his takedown five years earlier. On 18 February 2026, he also became acting director of the CDC.
Rob Elens — a GP in Meijel
In spring 2020, GP Rob Elens treated ten COVID patients with a hydroxychloroquine, zinc, and azithromycin protocol he developed with a local pharmacist. All ten recovered within a week. In March 2021, the Dutch health inspectorate announced sanctions against doctors still prescribing HCQ and ivermectin for COVID. Elens was fined €3,000 that December — the first doctor to be. In September 2022, the medical disciplinary tribunal ruled he had not violated the Medicines Act by prescribing off-label. The fine was dropped. He kept a reprimand — for statements, not for the prescriptions.
5. The Measures Themselves
The Mask Trial Found Nothing — and Was Enforced Anyway
Amsterdam's own municipal website published the results under the title "Uitkomsten gedragsexperiment mondkapjes" — outcomes of the mask behavioral experiment. Cameras, street observers, and interviews across the Wallen, Kalverstraat, Nieuwendijk (Amsterdam) and the city centre, Zuidplein, and Alexandrium (Rotterdam) found no difference in behavior between people wearing masks and people not wearing them — both groups kept the same distance. Whether masks affected actual virus transmission was never tested at all. The retail trade body INretail called the evaluation itself "shaky." The national mask mandate followed anyway.
The Curfew: "You Know Almost Nothing"
Parliament voted for the Dutch curfew on the strength of an RIVM model projecting a wave driven by the "British variant." The model itself was never made checkable — investigative outlet Follow the Money spent weeks trying to obtain it and found only papers describing the type of model used, not the model, the data, or the code. A statistician's verdict to FTM: "You have to take these predictions with a grain of salt. You know almost nothing." When the worst-case scenario failed to materialize, the government cited that as proof the curfew had worked — a claim with no way to be wrong.
On 16 February 2021, a Hague court ruled the curfew had to be lifted immediately: no genuine emergency, no proportionality test met. Within hours, an emergency appeal reversed the ruling and the curfew stood. Riots followed in 21 municipalities — the worst since 1980, according to the Dutch police union.
For nine months, from mid-March to December 2020, every freedom-restricting COVID measure in the Netherlands ran through emergency ordinances issued by regional safety-board chairs — a legal mechanism built for short, localized disasters. Parliament and municipal councils had no legislative or oversight role over them at all. A real parliamentary law, the Tijdelijke wet maatregelen covid-19, did not exist until December 2020.
6. The Vaccine Push
"A Good Gift From God's Hand"
Speaking to a Christian newspaper, Nederlands Dagblad, Health Minister Hugo de Jonge said: "I can see the vaccine in no other way than as a good gift from God's hand." He urged citizens with religious objections not to mix their doubts with "vague anti-vax stories," and framed the choice bluntly: "get sick or get vaccinated." A researcher, Anne Borkent, called the framing one-sided at the time — there were, she noted, other treatment options that deserved a hearing.
De Jonge also compared vaccine hesitancy to a national snack: "I hear people say, I don't know exactly what's in it. Then I think — come on, you've eaten frikandellen your whole life, and you don't know exactly what's in those either." On 10 July 2026, during the ongoing parliamentary inquiry into COVID policy, he was confronted with the quote. His answer: "Shall we not apply exegesis to that, please?" He called it "ridiculous" that the remark was still cited years later as undermining — then reversed the framing: "No — spreading disinformation, that was undermining."
"You Do It for Someone Else" — a Claim Known False Before It Launched
The government's rollout slogan sharpened over time into "Vaccineren doe je voor de ander" — you get vaccinated for someone else — built on the idea that vaccination would stop transmission and protect the vulnerable. Documents later obtained through freedom-of-information requests show that it was already known, before the campaign launched, that the vaccines had not been shown to prevent transmission — the trials never tested for it, and it was, in the department's own words, "not obvious for a respiratory virus" that they would. The altruistic claim at the center of the campaign rested on an assumption the government itself already knew was unproven.
7. Who Profited
The Dutch "Testen voor Toegang" testing program reserved €1.1 billion, roughly €900 million of it for Stichting Open Nederland. Test providers received a guaranteed fee of €387 per collection point per day, whether or not anyone was tested. One contractor, Lead Healthcare, booked €9.6 million in profit in 2021 alone.
Separately, Sywert van Lienden raised public goodwill for a "not-for-profit" mask foundation, then routed the actual €100 million, 40-million-mask deal through a private company he co-owned. Profit: €28.5 million. A court has since ordered him and his partners to repay €20.7 million; a separate criminal case is ongoing.
The vaccination campaign itself paid influencers directly through the national crisis communication team — content that explicitly covered vaccination. Public disclosures show Boef and Famke Louise received €42,500; Stuk TV, €151,742. The campaign as a whole — "Alleen Samen" — carried a total media value of roughly €27.5 million across 2020 and 2021.
8. The Human Cost
What the Numbers Show, Plainly
Suicide, ages 20-30: 199 in 2020, 237 in 2021 — concentrated in the hard-lockdown months of January, February, and December 2021.
Students: a 2021 national survey of 28,000 Dutch students found nearly 80% reported loneliness, 30% more anxiety or depression since the measures began, 51% experiencing psychological complaints.
Delayed care: roughly 5,000 missed cancer diagnoses, 305,000 fewer operations than expected by the end of 2021, and an estimated 320,000 healthy life-years lost.
9. Not Over Yet
This is not archival history. In May 2025, the European Court of Justice ruled that the European Commission was wrong to withhold text messages between Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, exchanged during negotiation of the EU's largest vaccine contract. The Commission's explanation — that the phone had since been "formatted and recycled" — did not satisfy the court. As of late July 2026, the messages still have not been produced. The Dutch parliamentary inquiry into the COVID response is still hearing witnesses. The diary that opened this article is still being read.
None of this required a single conspirator.
It required a health minister who believed he was doing good by simplifying. A researcher who believed a decisive public message mattered more than a hedge. A test manufacturer who believed his own kit was the right one to sell. Each of those beliefs, multiplied across every country in this article, produced the same shape: private uncertainty, public certainty, and years before the gap between the two became visible enough to document. The documents are catching up. This is where they currently stand.
